Dads connecting with their children

03 Mar, 2017

Every Tuesday evening a group of around 20 Dads meets in Mandurah for a free BBQ and to chat about taking care of themselves and their families.

On 28 March our 4dads program will welcome guest speaker Clark Wright to talk about how Dads can connect with their kids, of any age.

'Dads; diners, drive-ins and dives' is a presentation that explores the importance of Dads and father figures in children’s lives. It will create a conversation around how Dads and father figures can connect with their kids.

Clark is the Head of Preparatory School at Guildford Grammar and his seminars are known for their humour, sincerity, real-solutions and perspective they bring to the topic of schools, education and parenting. Frank and funny, Clark talks from experience as a father and an educator of children.

4dads is a Dads supporting Dads group, run by Relationships Australia WA, which focuses on building skills to assist their children to be positive, flexible and assertive. Research has shown that being a warm and supportive, involved and engaged father impacts positively on children’s mental well-being. It is open to Dads from Mandurah or Pinjarra who have children aged up to 15 years.

Group Facilitator Andre Cannavo said because of the nature of the group there is no set program, so it doesn’t matter if a participant misses one or a few weeks.

“One Dad is nominated to cook the BBQ and the participants are left to socialise between themselves,” Mr Cannavo said.

“This has built a strong bond between regular members and aids new members to become comfortable with the rest of the group."
