From Gender Dysphoria to Gender Euphoria

We invite you to join us for a conversation with internationally renowned sexologists and prominent trans activists Professor Esben Esther Pirelli Benestad and Professor Elsa Almås. They will be sharing their own personal and professional journey from gender dysphoria to gender euphoria where different attractions, gender identities and turn-on patterns are to be valued.

A video message from Elsa and Esben Esther

Elsa Almås, met Esben Esther Pirelli Benestad  in Bergen, Norway on Oct. 16th 1986. They have practically been together ever since.

In 1981 Elsa received a Cand. Psychol. from the University of Bergen. Esben Esther got hir authorisation as a medical doctor in 1977.  Their paths crossed as a result of their mutual interest and work within the field of sexology.

Elsa became a specialist in clinical psychology in 1988. They married the same year. 

In 1991 they took a course together and became family therapists IAP. By 2002 they were both authorised by the Nordic Association for Clinical Sexology (NACS) as specialists in Clinical Sexology.

Esben Esther has worked as a GP since 1977, and as clinical psychologist and sexologist since 1985. They have both worked with trans clients and other individuals with challenges within the field of sexology since the early 1980’s.

Since 2001 they have run a further educational program in sexological counselling at the University of Agder in Norway, with course places in high demand.

In 2012 both Elsa and Esben Esther were appointed professors in sexology at the University of Agder.

Elsa has been president of the Norwegian Society for Clinical Sexology, president of the Nordic Association for Clinical Sexology (NACS), member of the European Federation for Sexology (EFS) Executive Committee, member of the World Association for Sexual health (WAS) Executive Committee, and was appointed as European Secretary of the organisation in 2017.

Esben Esther has been on the board of what then was named the national union for transsexuals, member of the board of the Norwegian Society for Clinical Sexology and Secretary General of the European Federation for Sexology (EFS) since 2018.

Both are strong activists for trans rights in Norway and internationally and aim to bring awareness of the experience of people who are exploring or struggling with gender identity/trans identity. Esben and Elsa are committed to supporting the positive welcoming of diversity and self-determined gender identity.

Elsa and Esben Esther have three children together and five grandchildren. In 2002 Esben Esther’s son Even directed the prize winning movie: “All about my father”.

This will be the couple's fifth visit to Australia.
